Context

Situation is our first design priority. After a few casual visits on the site and in the studio, our first official client meeting was an evening listening to music on their stereo.

I returned to the site soon after to wander in the harshest time of the year and find where the land wanted the home to be. I remember standing at a particular spot looking North over the junipers, and it felt like the clients might want to prep dinner looking at that sky as if at the top of a mountain. Juniper has a scrubby base that could be masked by a low backsplash, and the hill crested nearby, making the sky look infinite.

From then until dark, I placed rocks where spaces and views appeared.
